Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need a fitness club?  Good physical fitness is one of the keys to good long term health.  Our modern
lifestyle has removed much of the mandatory physical work that humans used to do. In Plentywood, our long
cold winters make outdoor exercise impractical for much of the year.  A multi-purpose health facility with
trained personnel will improve the chance for our residents to gain and maintain their health.  See more at this link.

Who will use it?  As conceived, people of all ages and health conditions will find appropriate physical activities
to improve and maintain their physical fitness.  See more at this link.

How can it be financed?  We view this project as a community betterment project that will benefit most residents
of the community.  However, it is not a community necessity such as schools, roadways, water and sewer, police
etc.  For this reason, we feel that 'If you will use it, please help build it' policy should dominate the funding.  We
are asking for private donations and will apply for grants and low interest loans.  We are not asking that local tax
funds be used.  See more at this link.

What will it have for activity?  All of the usual fitness club machines as well as a walking track, hydrotherapy
pool, lap pool, dance revolution, meeting rooms, racquetball, etc.  See more at this link.

Didn’t Plentywood have one before that closed?  There are many differences between this planned facility and
the previous recreation center that was in Plentywood.  A few of these are: more public attention on fitness now,
improved building and energy efficiency techniques, full-time trained activities director, broader age groups
targeted for membership.  See more at this link.

Why not just exercise at home?  Exercise doesn't come naturally.  In order to maintain the long term activity
that is required for better health, the exercise has to combined with a pleasant atmosphere and socialization.
The basement treadmill gets quite boring in a short period of time.  Our facility will have many different activities
to keep the boredom down and appeal to many different tastes.

How much will it cost?  We are hoping to keep the costs in the range of two million dollars.  See more at this link

Where will it be?  Just west of the present golf course parking lot west of the Pioneer Manor. Link.

What will it look like?  It will be a rather utilitarian two story structure made of Insulated Concrete Foam block
with a permacrete siding.  As of January 2008, we are still awaiting final architectural drawings.  Once we have
final sketches they will be put on the website.

Won’t it be expensive to heat?  As planned, the facility will get 2/3 of its heat from ground source geothermal and
solar.  It will have good ceiling insulation, thermal mass wall, radiant heat and be partially underground.  The
expectation is that the utility costs will be 75% less than a similar sized building using conventional building
            techniques.

Doesn’t the hospital have physical therapy?  Physical therapy is the use of physical activity to regain function lost
because of illness or injury.  Physical therapy is a personal, individual, private activity as opposed fitness which
is social group activity performed to maintain physical health.  See more at this link.
